Her Royal Highness's Annual Festive Service of Carols Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual festive musical service at the historic Abbey, with attendees featuring dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have helped their communities.

The large audience will enjoy a mix of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from stars like award-winning actors.

Focusing on Kindness and Compassion

The central message of the concert, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

Attending the event are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose child passed away from a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a terminally ill child.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often quietly and unspoken, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the circumstances of individuals," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the festive gathering.

A Gradual Return

The royal has been undertaking her own gradual return to official duties following her health challenges and treatment, recently giving her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Music and Opportunity

Attendees entering the Abbey will enjoy performances from talented youth performers aided by the Future Talent charity, established in part by the late Duchess of Kent to increase availability of music lessons.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been helped by the organisation, with grants helping towards instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "amazing" to be taking part in tonight's service.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," she stated. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to cultivate their performance abilities.

Generations Gathering

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Attending the service will be people from various age groups.

That will feature young Saphia Turner, nine, honouree of a prize for youthful altruism, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to raise money for food banks.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Among the musical performers will be Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a Cornish sea shanty group, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."

This annual carol service will be broadcast on a major network on Christmas Eve.
